A New Chapter Begins
Monday, Deb and I return to work.
For me, it’ll be a largely transitional day as I add something new to my plate. As of that day, I will be assuming the role of News Editor at ComicMix. The online managing editor, Rick Marshall, has left the company and they have reconfigured their needs and made me an offer.
While I have been a fulltime freelancer for a year now, I’ve mentioned before the mental sense of dread that I will one day wake up and all the assignments will vanish. It’s not uncommon in the field. So, when Mike Gold invited me to lunch, I was not really looking for an offer but listened when it came.
Almost a year ago to the day, Mike took me to lunch to talk about my life post-Weekly World News and we began discussing a role for me within ComicMix. It led to additional writing and some work on Phase 3, which will be announced finally in the coming weeks. A fulltime post never quite gelled and that seemed fine.
Things are different now. The site is a little more mature and stable. They know what they need and one of those things is to take their news coverage to a new level and felt I could do that. I spat out a variety of thoughts as to what was working and what I saw as things that could be done differently. Mike agreed with most everything I said and threw the offer on the table. The salary and hours provides me with an incredible base to work from which takes a lot of mental pressure away.
Will you be seeing immediate changes next week? Nope. Rick’s wrapped up things on his end nicely and I need time to get to know the existing writing staff and see where we go.
I’m giving up some of the small things I’ve been doing to make time for this. My work with ACE has also been wrapping up with new work yet to be signed so the timing actually works for my schedule. I’m still running the Famous Monsters of Filmland site and will continue my freelance writing. I’m actually looking forward to getting started on the Iron Man novel and have two potential comics projects in the hopper in addition to other book pitches.
How on earth will I manage all the time? An interesting question and yes, it may prove I have bitten off more than is practical. If so, I’ll adjust and adapt. All the people I’m working with right now seem willing to help me make this adjustment.

Best wishes with the new job. It certainly sounds from here like the timing worked out for the best all around re your work. When you needed to be with Robbie, you were able to, and that was huge.

Wonderful timing. You had the flexibility of free lance when you needed it and now that you're concerned about financial security, a steady job appears. Someone up there likes you. I wish you much happiness in the new position.

Congratulations. I noticed your byline popping up more and more on ComicMix and that Rick Marshall's was missing (and missed by me), but I hadn't realized that a transition had been made until today. I didn't put two and two together. Good luck with the new job. I'm looking forward to reading more of your stuff.
